The Rector of Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, Engr. Dr. Christopher Okoro Kalu, has said the institution will improve on its third-place finish at the maiden edition of the Abia State Tertiary Sports Fiesta by emerging overall champion in the forthcoming competition.

Dr. Okoro stated this in Aba on Friday when the Torch of Unity for the Abia State Tertiary Sports Fiesta (ASTESF 2026) arrived at the polytechnic.

The Rector, who warmly received the delegation, expressed confidence in the institution’s athletes, saying the polytechnic is determined to compete for top honours.

“With renewed determination, Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic is setting its sights on the top spot as the race for glory begins,” he said.

According to the organisers, the Torch of Unity tour forms part of the statewide mobilisation drive to encourage participation, promote unity and identify emerging sporting talents across tertiary institutions in the state.

A statement from Abia Sports TV said the milestone reflects Governor Alex Otti’s drive to make sports a viable platform for youth development, talent discovery and creation of opportunities for young Abians to excel.

The Rector noted that beyond winning laurels, sports remains a critical tool for fostering discipline, teamwork and physical well-being among students, adding that the institution has intensified training and preparation across various sporting events.

He commended the state government for sustaining the Fiesta and for providing a platform that unites students from different institutions while promoting healthy competition and camaraderie.

Dr. Kalu further assured that Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic would continue to support the state’s sports development agenda and produce athletes who can represent Abia and the nation at higher levels of competition.
