Ogbonnaya Ọnụ Polytechnic Declares War Against Cultism On Campus

The Rector of Ogbonnaya Ọnụ Polytechnic Aba (formerly Abia State Polytechnic), Prof. Christopher Kalu Okoro has given a stern warning to students of the institution to desist from cultism and any cult related activities while they remain students of the school, or face far reaching consequences.

Prof. Okoro gave the warning on Saturday, March 21, 2026 while delivering his speech during the 32nd matriculation ceremony of the school held in Aba, Abia State.

While emphasizing the need for students to embrace discipline, hard work, and integrity, Prof Okoro made it clear that there were no shortcuts to success in the institution.

“You have no other option than to work hard in your studies. There is no shortcut to success here. Read your books, and you will pass your exams”.

He emphasized that attendance to lectures forms a key component of continuous assessment, warning that the institution maintains zero tolerance for truancy and “ghost students”.

Prof Okoro announced that the newly matriculated students, particularly the first year students, are set to become the first cohort to fully utilize the modern facilities at the institution’s Osisioma Campus.

He commended the developmental strides of Governor Alex Otti, describing the campus project as a reflection of the Governor’s intentional and reform-driven leadership.

He noted that the facilities include state-of-the-art, ultra-modern hostels for both male and female students, as well as a conducive, world-class learning environment.

According to him, the institution’s curriculum is designed to promote both academic excellence and practical skills acquisition, urging students to take advantage of the opportunity to develop at least one skill while in school.

Highlighting achievements within the institution over the past 24 months under his leadership, Okoro attributed the progress to the support of the state government.

Prof. Okoro urged the over ten thousand matriculating students to take full advantage of the conducive academic environment, emphasizing that their training is aimed at shaping them into both skilled and responsible members of society.

He also acknowledged the role of the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Prof. Uche Eme Uche, who represented the Governor at the ceremony.

While speaking, the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Prof. Uche Eme Uche, commended the Dr Alex Otti administration’s strides, citing improvements in infrastructure, prompt payment of salaries, and enhanced staff welfare as key achievements strengthening the education sector.

She also applauded the Rector’s leadership and ongoing reforms, noting that the interventions are restoring confidence in tertiary education across the state.
