Obingwa General Hospital Ready for Commissioning as Abia Migrates to Digital Healthcare – Health Commissioner

The first retrofitted and digitally equipped secondary healthcare facility under the administration of Governor Alex Otti, the Obingwa General Hospital, Mgboko, is set for commissioning on Tuesday.

The Commissioner for Health, Professor Enoch Ogbonnaya Uche, disclosed this on Sunday, August 23, 2026, while inspecting the level of preparedness of the facility ahead of the commissioning.

Prof. Uche said the hospital signals Abia State Government’s gradual migration from analogue to digital healthcare delivery, with AI-enabled equipment that can seamlessly check vital signs and carry out other medical procedures.

According to him, the facility is equipped with a digital stadiometer that automatically measures height, weight, blood pressure, pulse rate and calculates Body Mass Index, BMI, at a glance.

“You just stand on it and it measures your height, your weight, and then there is a hand that you can use to get your blood pressure, your pulse, everything. And then it will calculate your BMI. So all your vital parameters at a glance, you get it. And because it is already linked to cloud, it transfers and saves all that information in our digital archive,” he explained.

The Commissioner said the project is part of Governor Otti’s vision to ensure Abians, including those in rural and suburban areas, have access to the highest quality of healthcare irrespective of location.

He recalled that the hospital was previously dysfunctional, with leaking roofs and infested by rodents and reptiles, but was completely remodelled on the Governor’s approval rather than demolished.

“What was here before has been remodelled to a modern, and I dare say an ultra-modern healthcare system. Abians should be proud of what His Excellency is doing,” Prof. Uche said.

He added that the hospital now boasts world-class facilities including modern digital beds, radiology unit, eye and dental clinics, state-of-the-art theatre and solar-powered electricity, with adequate healthcare personnel to man it.

Corroborating him, the Chief Executive Officer of the Abia State Hospitals Management Board, HMB, Dr. Odochi Azubuike, said Governor Otti is fixing the health ecosystem, noting that secondary healthcare remains the bridge between primary and tertiary care.

“At the level of secondary healthcare facilities, we talk about general hospitals, cottage hospitals, eye and dental clinics. We have an eye clinic here, we are going to have a dental clinic, and a modern laboratory with auto analysers and chemical analysers. So we are going to offer comprehensive healthcare and emergency services. The Governor is a trailblazer because he understands the healthcare system,” Dr. Azubuike stated.

The Obingwa General Hospital will serve as a secondary referral facility for residents of the area, with primary healthcare centres in Obingwa linked to it.
