Lawmaker Marks 3 Years in Office, Lists Legislative Strides, Constituency Projects

AROCHUKWU, Abia State — The Majority Leader of the Abia State House of Assembly and member representing Arochukwu State Constituency, Hon. Okoro Uchenna Kalu, has marked three years in office, highlighting a record of legislative activities and constituency projects delivered since his inauguration on June 14, 2023.

Speaking on the anniversary on Sunday, June 15, 2026, Hon. Kalu said the period had been “eventful and fruitful” despite serving in dual roles as constituency representative and Majority Leader, which he described as “the mouthpiece of the Executive at the floor of the House.”

Legislative Record

According to the lawmaker, he has sponsored over 40 bills in the last three years. Several have been passed into law while others are at various stages of legislative process.

Hon. Kalu added that he also moved several Motions and Matters of Urgent Public Importance. As Chairman, House Committee on Rules and Ethics and the Education Committee, he said his oversight functions covered Abia State University, Uturu; Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba; Abia State College of Health, Aba; Abia State College of Education Technical, Arochukwu; and key education ministries and boards.

Constituency Projects

The lawmaker listed projects executed in Arochukwu Constituency to include solar-powered boreholes in Amaebem Ututu, Amaeke Abam, and Ahia Nkwo, Obinkita; construction of Atan Abam Daily Market; reconstruction of Umuzomgbo Ihechiowa Community Hall; donation of a generator set and public address system to Inyom Atan Abam; and construction of overhead tanks for Ndi Owu Community.

Others are distribution of fertilizers and farming materials, facilitation of NDDC solar street lights, yearly free JAMB registration for over 330 students, award of scholarships through the Unubiko Foundation, distribution of educational materials, and rice palliatives for aged women.

He also cited youth empowerment with Keke buses and motorcycles through recommendations to the Unubiko Foundation and Hon. Ibe Okwara, as well as a Business Support Programme for women worth over ₦5,000,000. Through his OKU Foundation, he said constituents received medical and welfare assistance, while others secured employment in the state and beyond.

State-Facilitated Projects

Hon. Kalu said his “cordial working relationship with the Executive” under Governor Alex Chioma Otti helped attract projects to the constituency. These include renovation and equipping of multiple health centers in Obieze ISU, Achara, Ndi Oji Abam, Atan Abam, Idima Abam, Ndi Agwu, Ututu, and Arochukwu communities; construction of Smart Schools in Ohabuike Primary School, Umunna Abuo, Atan Abam, Ozu Abam, Amuru, and Ndi Ojiugwo Abam; and installation of several 300KVA and 500KVA transformers across Abam and Arochukwu.

Road projects listed include the Ohafia-Amammiri Ihechiowa Road, Ahuama Abam Road, Abam Ring Road, Catholic-Aba Road Amuvi, Omenuko Bridge at Igu River, Arochukwu-Ohafia Federal Road, and internal roads at ASCETA and other communities. He noted that many of the interventions followed his motion of Urgent Public Importance on the state of roads in Arochukwu.

Outlook

The Majority Leader reaffirmed his declaration to seek a second term under the Labour Party in 2027, pledging to deliver at least one project in each of the 11 wards of Arochukwu before the end of the current tenure.

He expressed gratitude to Governor Alex Otti, Chief Chijioke James Ume of Unubiko Foundation, his family, colleagues in the Assembly, Chief Anderson Okoro, the Labour Party, support groups, and constituents for their backing.

“We will never relent in giving our people the best,” Hon. Kalu stated. “We will make sure that we leave no stone unturned in ensuring that we recover all that we may have lost in the past due to the neglect of our Constituency by the previous administrations.”
