Institute of Surveyors Partners Ogbonnaya Ọnụ Polytechnic, Pledges N200,000 for the Best Graduating Student of SEDT at Each Convocation

The Rector of Ogbonnaya Ọnụ Polytechnic Aba, Prof Christopher Kalu Okoro has attributed the progress made by the institution to the grace of God and the backing of the state government.

Prof Okoro stated this when he received a delegation of the Institution of Surveyors, Abia State Branch, to the Rector, Prof. Engr. Christopher Okoro Kalu, on Thursday, March 26, 2026.

“As God continues to guide us, alongside the support of His Excellency, Dr. Alex Otti, who has elevated tertiary education, we will keep advancing the cause of humanity,” he stated.

The Rector emphasized the importance of hands-on training, noting that it sets polytechnic education apart from the university system, directing that students be exposed more to fieldwork to complement classroom learning.

‎“A lack of practical exposure makes students feel disadvantaged compared to their university counterparts. Polytechnic education is skill-driven, and no system is superior to the other,” he said.

‎He urged students to embrace professionalism, beginning from their immediate environment, and directed that SEDT students commence lectures at the Osisioma Campus extension from April and assured that transportation arrangements would be put in place.

The Rector also assured the institution will cover 50 per cent of their monthly dues to enhance effective representation.

Earlier, the Branch Chairman, Vincent Eze (FNIS), outlined plans for collaboration with the polytechnic, noting that the institution has undergone significant transformation, presenting its current state as a clear departure from the past.

Eze applauded the Rector’s administration, referring to him as “a gift from heaven,” and added that the institution now commands greater respect than in previous years.

‎“Your good works speak for you. You have embraced a culture of neatness. If no one rewards you, God will,” he said.

‎He also indicated the body’s intention to support the school through the provision of practical equipment and professional manpower, in line with efforts to produce industry-ready graduates.

‎According to him, the Institution of Surveyors, Abia State Branch, will introduce a sustained cash award of ₦200,000 for the best graduating student of SEDT at each convocation, aimed at encouraging academic excellence.
