“Abia North Is A Zone of Particular Concern”, Group says
A sociopolitical group, Abia North Stakeholders Network, has expressed deep worry over recent developments in the politics of Abia North, saying the area has become a “Zone of Particular Concern”.
The group in a statement on Wednesday, signed by its Chairman, Chief Dike Ukeagu Ume, and made available to newsmen, cautioned politicians from the zone to desist from using their social media platforms to make inciting and defaming posts against their political opponents.
It said a former member of the Abia State House of Assembly from the zone, made a post which according to them was later pulled down, where the former lawmaker said “bad things” against the Labour Party Senatorial candidate for 2027, Chief David Ogba Onuoha, describing such posts as “unacceptable and condemnable”.
“We have observed with dismay, recent political development in Abia North where politicians use their social media handles to defame their perceived political opponents”.
“We want to categorically state that the Abia North Stakeholders Network will North fold its hands and watch our sons and daughters destroy one another on social media in the name of politics”.
“A typical example is a post made by a former member of the Abia State House of Assembly from Abia North, made a post on his Facebook handle where he said many bad things against Chief David Ogba Onuoha, the Labour Party Senatorial candidate for 2027”.
“It is true that he later deleted the post but the social media does not forget. People saw the post and some may have saved it”.
“Such comments and public posts has destructive tendencies and the potential to breed acrimony, bitterness, rancour and erosion of public trust in the system”.
“It is unacceptable and condemnable”.
The group further cautioned the Senator representing Abia North in the red chamber of the National Assembly, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu to be wary of people around him who according to them, are “serial betrayers”.
The statement said the former Lawmaker who posted bad things against Chief David Ogba Onuoha is in his camp and “is known for betraying people who held the ladder for him to climb”.
The group cautioned Senator Orji Kalu not to allow his allies to resort to personal attacks on his political opponents, saying that they are all brothers, in pursuit of a common goal, “development”.
They called for issue based campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The statement concluded by warning the youths against making themselves available to be used as political thugs, billboard destroyers and ballot box snatchers.
