Chief Iheanyi Chinasa Floods Bende With Street Lights

The Abia State Chief Liaison Officer in Abuja, Chief Iheanyi Chinasa has called on Bende constituents to take responsibility of public property in their various localities to protect them from vandalism.

Chief Chinasa made the call on Sunday, March 22, 2026 during the flag-off ceremony of “Project Switch On Bende”, at Lohum Community School, Lohum Imenyi, in Bende Local Government Area.

The Initiative, a Niger Delts Development Commission (NDDC), assisted programme that centres on distribution and installation of solar powered street lights across Bende local government area.

“As we flag off this project, I call on all stakeholders, community leaders, and residents to take ownership of these facilities. Protect them. Preserve them. Let them serve you for years to come”.

The Labour Party Chieftain said the project is more than the installation of solar street lights, rather about restoring confidence in governance, adding the initiative is aimed at creating safer streets for children, enabling traders to extend their businesses into the night, and giving Bende communities a renewed sense of belonging and pride.

“Through the support of the Niger Delta Development Commission under its Operation Light Up the Niger Delta programme, we have been able to attract and successfully install over 486 solar-powered street lights across Uzuakoli and Umuimenyi Ward within just a few months”.

“Our mission is clear—to ensure that every ward, every community, and every street in Bende Federal Constituency feels the impact of light. Because where there is light, there is security. Where there is light, there is an opportunity. And where there is light, there is life”.

“This initiative also aligns strongly with the developmental vision of our dear Governor, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, whose commitment to transforming Abia State continues to inspire us to do more for our people”.

“Let me assure you today—this is not a one-time intervention. This is a movement. A movement to transform Bende. A movement to bring the government closer to the people. A movement to ensure that no community is left behind”.

Also speaking, the Honourable Commissioner for Health in Abia State, Prof. Enoch Ogbonnaya Uche, who represented the state Governor, Dr Alex Otti, commended Chief Chinasa for the initiative, describing it as a “laudable initiative”, which he said is in alignment with the light-up projects of the state government, led by Dr Alex Otti, anchored by the Ministry of Power and Public Utilities, through which, many communities across the state have been illuminated, through thousands of solar-powered lighting.

He added that solar powered street lights are fully useful for urban and rural communities, stressing that it is playing a major role as the driver of the development and transformation of Abia State under the administration of Governor Alex Otti.

Prof Enoch said the significance of the impact is already seen in the area of the economy, through the revitalization of night life, lighting up of markets.

The member representing Isiala Ngwa North and South federal constituency in the Federal House of Representatives, Hon. Ginger Onwusibe, while commending Chief Iheanyi Chinasa, appreciated the state governor, Dr Alex Otti on his transformation strides in the state.

Hon. Onwusibe posited that Dr Alex Otti has earned himself a second term in office, making reference to previous governors of the state since 1999, who all served two terms in office.

Hon. Onwusibe asserted that Governor Alex Otti has outperformed the three past governors of the state, and as such has earned a reelection in 2027.

He said if the president, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is qualified to go for a second tenure as president, Dr Alex Otti is also good for a second tenure, adding that the Abia State Governor Dr Alex Otti would not oppose the reflection bid of President Bola Tinubu.

“I can tell you, with all sense of responsibility, that Alex Otis has outperformed all these governors. And because of that, he has earned his second tenure”

“Let me also tell you, as one of the Apostles of the governor, that Mr. President has earned the second tenure and the governor is not going to oppose the second tenure of Mr. President. What is good for the geese is all so good for the gander”.

The event brought together, Labour party stakeholders, government appointees, elected government officials, traditional rulers, political support groups among others.
