Urgent Call for Enugu Governor to Fulfill Promise to 2023/2024 Enugu Rangers Title Winners
By Chuks Ogbu
Enugu supporters and football enthusiasts are raising their voices in concern over unfulfilled promises made to the 2023/2024 Enugu Rangers International Football Club squad, the team that secured the 8th Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title. Despite the team’s impressive achievement and the community’s expectations, the initial pledge by Enugu State Governor, Mr. Peter Mbah, has yet to be honored.
In recent years, Governor Mbah has demonstrated notable generosity towards the club, rewarding the players and management with substantial incentives. For instance, after winning the 2025/2026 NPFL title, the governor announced a reward of ₦150 million, along with plots of land for each player and key staff members, during a dinner at the Government House in Enugu. Similarly, he pledged ₦50 million and non-cash rewards for the 2023/2024 title-winning squad.
However, there are concerns that this promise has not been fulfilled for the 2023/2024 champions, despite the team’s historic achievement—their 8th league title. Supporters and stakeholders believe that the sequence of promises and rewards should reflect the order of titles won, emphasizing that the 8th title came before the 9th, and thus, the current squad deserves their share of recognition and reward.
The long-standing pattern of political promises to victorious teams often raising hopes, only to be left unfulfilled, has cast a shadow of doubt over this particular case. As the 8th title-winning squad of 2023/2024 eagerly await their due recognition, the people of Enugu State urge Governor Peter Mbah to honor his commitments. Fulfillment of this promise would not only motivate local players but also reaffirm the government’s commitment to supporting and celebrating sporting excellence in Enugu.
“We call on Governor Peter Mbah to redeem his promise and give the 2023/2024 Enugu Rangers squad the recognition they deserve. Let’s ensure that their smiles are as bright as their trophies.“
The time has come for the governor to ensure that the current champions, alongside their predecessors, are celebrated and rewarded accordingly. The people of Enugu and football fans nationwide look forward to seeing the government’s actions match its words, because true leadership is about keeping promises and uplifting those who bring pride to the community.
