The Governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Abia State, Chief Etugo Ndubuisi Ogah, has commiserated with victims of the devastating flood that ravaged communities in Ohafia Local Government Area, Bende LGA and other parts of the state, assuring them that they are not alone in these trying times.

Chief Ogah, in a strongly worded statement issued on Tuesday in Umuahia, described the incident as heartbreaking and painful, lamenting the loss of farmlands, homes, businesses and properties worth millions of naira to the flood.

“I received with deep pain and sadness the news of the flooding that has submerged houses, destroyed farms and displaced hundreds of families in Ohafia, Bende and other affected LGAs. My heart goes out to every mother, father, youth and child who is affected by this disaster. I want you to know that you are not alone. We share in your pains and we stand with you in this trying time,” Chief Ogah said.

The NDC governorship hopeful condemned what he described as the insensitive and lackadaisical attitude of the Abia State Government to issues of ecological disaster and emergency preparedness, noting that the flood, though natural, was worsened by poor drainage management, lack of proactive measures and failure to heed early warnings.

He said it is unacceptable that in 2026, communities in Abia are still left to their fate whenever disaster strikes, without immediate government intervention.

“It is disheartening that up till now, the Abia State Government has not shown serious presence in the affected communities. No emergency relief, no temporary shelters, no concrete plan to resettle or support the victims. Governance is about people and the welfare of the people must come first. This nonchalant attitude must stop,” he fired.

Chief Ogah called on the Abia State Government as a matter of urgency to mobilize the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the Ministry of Environment and other relevant agencies to immediately assess the extent of damage and provide relief materials, medical support and temporary shelter to the displaced victims.

He also urged the state government to liaise with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Federal Government to work out a long-term solution to the recurring flood menace in Ohafia, Bende and other flood-prone areas in the state.

Chief Ogah further appealed to public-spirited individuals, NGOs and corporate organizations to come to the aid of the flood victims, while praying for God’s protection and quick recovery for all affected families.
