Accountability and Transparency: The Missing Link in Bende Federal Constituency Development

Democracy is not measured by the number of billboards erected or ceremonies organized. It is measured by how public resources are managed and how honestly elected representatives account to the people who entrusted them with power.

As the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu occupies one of the highest legislative offices in Nigeria. With such privilege comes an even greater responsibility—not only to attract development but to be transparent about every kobo allocated for the development of Bende Federal Constituency.

There have been widespread claims that Bende Federal Constituency has benefited from constituency development allocations running into several billions of naira. Whether the exact figure is ₦7 billion or more, one question remains unavoidable: How much has actually been allocated? How much has been released? What projects were executed? What did each ward receive?

These are not questions of opposition. They are questions of accountability.

Bende Federal Constituency consists of thirteen political wards. If billions of naira have indeed been earmarked for constituency projects, then every ward deserves to know its fair share. Every community deserves a clear breakdown of projects, contract values, contractors, completion status, and beneficiaries.

Transparency is not an act of charity. It is a constitutional obligation.

Citizens should never be expected to applaud projects without access to the financial details behind them. Development is not measured by commissioning ceremonies alone; it is measured by value for money, fairness in distribution, and lasting impact on people’s lives.

Supporters often point to schools, roads, boreholes, and other projects commissioned across parts of the constituency. Those projects deserve recognition where they genuinely improve lives. At the same time, the existence of projects does not eliminate the duty to publish comprehensive financial records showing what was budgeted, what was spent, and what remains outstanding.

Imagine what over ₦500 million could accomplish in a single ward if invested prudently. Rural roads could become motorable. Primary healthcare centres could be properly equipped. Schools could be renovated and furnished. Youths could receive practical vocational training and startup support. Farmers could gain access to modern agricultural equipment. Clean water could become available in neglected communities.

That is why accountability matters.

The people of Bende are not asking for favours. They are asking for information. They are asking for openness. They are asking to know whether public funds have been deployed fairly across all thirteen wards.

Leadership should never fear scrutiny. A transparent leader welcomes questions because accountability strengthens public trust. It is secrecy, not scrutiny, that breeds suspicion.

As we approach another electoral season, political campaigns should not revolve around slogans or personality cults. They should revolve around measurable performance backed by verifiable records.

Therefore, this is a respectful call on the leadership representing Bende Federal Constituency to publish a comprehensive account of constituency development funds and projects: allocations received, projects awarded, contractors engaged, amounts spent, locations, and current status.

The people deserve facts, not propaganda.

History remembers leaders not merely for the offices they occupied, but for the integrity with which they managed public resources. Accountability is the foundation of democracy, and transparency is the language through which leaders earn the enduring trust of the people.
