NLC Loses General Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja

The Nigeria Labour Congress has announced the death of its General Secretary, Comrade Emmanuel Okechukwu Ugboaja.

The union disclosed this in a communiqué at the end of its National Executive Council meeting held in Enugu.

According to the NLC, Ugboaja died on Friday, August 22, 2026, after a prolonged illness. The Congress described the death as “a tragic loss to the Nigerian and global trade union movement.”

It hailed the late General Secretary as “an erudite scholar, passionate advocate and courageous defender of the working class” who dedicated his years of service to the welfare of Nigerian workers and the fight for social justice.

The NLC said it is collaborating with the bereaved family to ensure a befitting burial for him.

The Congress also commiserated with his family, affiliate unions and workers nationwide, urging them to remain committed to the ideals of equity, justice and fairness which Ugboaja stood for.
