PDP HOUSE OF REPS CANDIDATE URGES GRASSROOTS FOOTBALL DEVELOPMENT AFTER NOVELTY MATCH IN UMUAHIA

The PDP candidate for Ikwuano/Umuahia North and South Federal Constituency and former Chairman of Umuahia South Local Government Area, Hon Benson Humphrey, has called for greater investment in grassroots football, saying sports remain a key tool for youth engagement and community unity.

He made the call on Sunday in Umuahia during a novelty football match organized in his honour between Team Philippines and Team Pakistan. The match, played before a large crowd of supporters and residents, ended in a 3-3 draw.

Speaking after the game, the former council boss said the energy and talent displayed by the players showed that Abia has what it takes to produce national and international stars if given the right support.

“This novelty match is not just about entertainment. It is about encouraging our youths at the grassroots to embrace sports, stay away from crime, and discover their God-given talents,” he said.

He commended the organizers for putting together the event and pledged to work with sports stakeholders, schools, and community clubs to provide more platforms for young footballers in Ikwuano, Umuahia North and Umuahia South when elected.

The novelty match lived up to its billing as both Team Philippines and Team Pakistan traded goals in an exciting contest that kept spectators on their feet till the final whistle. The 3-3 result was celebrated by fans who described the game as a symbol of unity and sportsmanship.

Community leaders, youth groups, and PDP stakeholders in attendance praised the initiative, noting that such events help to foster peace and bring people together across wards in the federal constituency.

The PDP candidate reaffirmed his commitment to youth development, education and job creation as part of his campaign ahead of the next elections.

Speaking also, the Special Guest, Chief Ezenwa Igwe, also known as Triple C, commended Hon Benson Humphrey for honoring the invitation. He said the novelty match was put together to promote peace, unity and to encourage young talents at the grassroots.

“We are grateful to our brother and PDP candidate for Ikwuano/Umuahia North and South, the former Chairman of Umuahia South, Hon Benson Humphrey for honoring us with his presence. This novelty match was to promote peace, unity and grassroots football. We believe with leaders like him supporting our youths, the future of sports in our constituency is bright.”

Also speaking on behalf of Team Philippines, the coach described the game as exciting and competitive. He noted that the 3-3 draw was a fair result and a sign that both teams played with sportsmanship and respect.

“It was a good game and a 3-3 draw shows there were no losers today. We thank Chief Igwe and our father, the former Chairman, for encouraging us. We promise to keep working hard and make our communities proud.”

For the coach of Team Pakistan, the match was more than football. He said events like this help to unite communities and keep youths engaged, and he called for more support for grassroots sports.

“We came out to play, have fun and unite. We appreciate the support from our leaders. Grassroots football needs this kind of backing and we are ready for more matches like this.”

Hon Benson Humphrey and Chief Ezenwa Igwe made cash donations and sporting kits to both teams to motivate them.
