Leaders Honour Aguiyi-Ironsi At 60th Memorial, Call For Unity And National Integration In Umuahiaq

On Wednesday, July 29, 2026, political, military and traditional leaders converged on the Aguiyi-Ironsi Conference Centre, Umuahia, Abia State, to mark the 60th Memorial Anniversary of Nigeria’s first Military Head of State and first indigenous Commander of the Nigerian Army, Major General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi.

The solemn ceremony featured the laying of wreaths at the tomb of the late Head of State in recognition of his service and sacrifice to the nation.

In a citation delivered by Louisa Aguiyi-Ironsi, the late military leader was described as a patriotic statesman and pioneer of indigenous military leadership who dedicated his life to preserving Nigeria’s cohesion during a turbulent period.

“This memorial is more than a ceremonial observance. It is an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on our history, honour sacrifices made in service to the country, and recommit ourselves to peace, justice and national unity,” she said.

Louisa noted that General Aguiyi-Ironsi’s legacy continues to inspire generations, stressing that true national progress can only be achieved when citizens embrace unity over division and the collective good above sectional interests.

She also paid tribute to the late Lieutenant Colonel Adekunle Fajuyi, describing his loyalty and sacrifice as enduring symbols of courage and honour.
She added that the wreaths laid represented respect for those who paid the ultimate price in service to Nigeria and reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to peaceful coexistence.

Delivering the vote of thanks, Ambassador Tom Aguiyi-Ironsi described the 60th anniversary as the most remarkable remembrance held in honour of his father.

He expressed appreciation to all dignitaries, family members and guests, and particularly commended the Abia State Government for renovating the gravesite and supporting the event.

“We are optimistic that more developmental projects will be undertaken in the years ahead,” he said.

He urged guests to proceed to the International Conference Centre for further activities including tributes, discussions and entertainment.

Dignitaries at the event included President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa; former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan; Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State, represented by Chief Law Mefor; Abia State Deputy Governor of Abia State , Engine Ikechukwu Emetu; member representing Umuahia Ikwuano Federal Constituency, Hon. Obi Aguocha, represented by Dr. Sham Uko; former minister of state for Mines and Steel, Dr. Uchechukwu Ogah, Secretary to the Abia State government, Dr. Emmanuel Meribole; the Abia State Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu; Archbishop Chibuzor Opoko; as well as heads of federal agencies and other distinguished guests.

The memorial ended with renewed calls for national unity, peaceful coexistence and commitment to patriotism — ideals exemplified by the late Major General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi.
