ABIA PARA-ATHLETES SHINE AS NEW BOARD DRIVES EARLY SUCCESS WITH STRATEGIC SUPPORT

Abia State has recorded an impressive outing in para-athletics, securing one silver and three bronze medals at the National Para Athletics Championship in Abuja—an achievement that highlights the resilience of its athletes and the impact of early intervention by the newly inaugurated Abia State Para Athletics Association Board.

The medals did not come by chance. At the start of the season, the board moved swiftly to sponsor a comprehensive training camp for para-athletes in Umuahia. The program provided structured preparation, including proper feeding, a disciplined training regime, and the provision of essential equipment such as running spikes.

This deliberate investment in athlete welfare and performance created the foundation for success, ensuring that Abia’s representatives were physically prepared, mentally focused, and competitively equipped for the national stage.

The Board of the Abia State Para Athletics Association was officially inaugurated on April 29, 2026, at the Indoor Hall of Umuahia Township Stadium by the Deputy Governor, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, on behalf of the Governor, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR. The event marked a renewed commitment by the state government to inclusive sports development and equal opportunities for all athletes.

Speaking at the inauguration, the Deputy Governor charged the board to provide strong leadership, promote athlete development, and expand opportunities for participation at higher levels. The Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Sir Nwaobilor Nwadimma Ananaba, also emphasized the need for dedication and alignment with the state’s vision of becoming a leading sports hub.

However, beyond policy direction, the board has already demonstrated action. The early success at the national championship reflects a clear shift toward intentional planning, athlete-centered support, and measurable outcomes.

Chairman of the Board, Chief Uduma Idika Uduma (Ochiriozua 1 of Ugwuoyiriegbe), described the progress as a sign of what is possible with the right structure in place. Drawing from his own experience as a former international athlete, he reiterated the importance of proper preparation and sustained support.

He noted that the board remains committed to strengthening grassroots development, improving athlete welfare, and expanding access to training and competition. With the foundation already laid through the Umuahia camp program, Abia’s para-athletes are now better positioned to compete and excel on bigger stages.

The recent medal haul stands as both an achievement and a signal of greater potential ahead—proof that with the right backing, Abia’s para-athletes can continue to rise and deliver outstanding performances.
