Nnamdi Kanu Protest: Abia House Of Assembly Under Fire

The Abia State House of Assembly has come under fire over their inability to show up for the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest in Abuja as widely publicized.

The House during plenary passed a motion to join the protest to demand the release to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, organized by Activist, Omoleye Sowore in Abuja.

This was confirmed by Sowore in a Facebook post where he said he has spoken with the Deputy Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Okezie Mmeregini concerning the protest and that the House would choose a date.

Sowore made another post confirming that the House chose a date and that the protest would hold on the chosen date by the House, —October 20, 2025.

A Civil Society group, Abia Coalition for Justice and Equity has questioned the rationale behind what it described as a “blatant deceit” and “hypocrisy” of the House.

In a statement on Monday signed by its convener, Comrade Okwute Otuonye, the group expressed disappointment by the action of the Abia State House of Assembly for not showing up for one of their own, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, rather the House went on a jamboree in London.

“We are very disappointed with the members of the Abia House for Assembly for not showing solidarity with their son Mazi Nnamdi kanu during the protest in Abuja on Monday.”

Describing the action as “insensitive”, the group faulted the house, saying the action is “unacceptable”.

“This display of insensitivity is unacceptable considering the earlier information that the members would be part of the protest, instead information has it that all the members are currently in London on an excursion to a country that doesn’t practice the version of democracy Nigeria is practicing.”
