Abia Commissioner Warns Traditional Rulers Against Fanning Embers Of Violence

The Honourable Commissioner for the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Prince Uzor Nwachukwu, has called on traditional rulers, Presidents-General and all town union leaders to ensure the sustenance of peace, unity, and order in their respective communities.

Nwachukwu gave the charge during an interactive meeting held in his office at the JAAC Building Complex, Ogurube Layout, Umuahia on Friday, with traditional rulers and community leaders from Amaokwe Item in Bende Local Government Area.

The Commissioner emphasized that no community could thrive in an atmosphere of lawlessness and disorder. He stated that the government of Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, has provided an enabling environment for peaceful coexistence across the state and would not condone any form of crisis from any community.

The Commissioner further urged the people of Amaokwe Item to show due respect to their traditional rulers and to always keep them informed of developments within their domains. He expressed concern that many traditional rulers were not adequately briefed on the affairs of their communities.

In his remarks, HRH Eze Johnson Amaukwu acknowledged the ongoing leadership crisis in the Amaokwe Item community, attributing it to issues surrounding the elections of executives of the various town unions, including the male and female wings.

Also speaking, Hon. Kingsley Ogba Nwaokoro, former President-General of Amaokwe Item, clarified that by their community’s constitution, any elected leader is entitled to a three-year tenure, after which the individual may seek reelection or step aside for new leadership to emerge.
